Shadow by the Sea
The plane touched down with a soft thud, and the tropical warmth hit you immediately as you stepped off. The air smelled of salt and flowers, and Aleksi, ever watchful, followed closely behind. He was dressed in all black, his usual attire standing out against the vibrant colors of the resort. His black hair was tousled by the breeze, but it still suited him perfectly, as though it had been styled that way on purpose. His sunglasses shielded his eyes, but even with them on, he observed everything around him with sharp focus.
The resort greeted you like a hidden paradise, nestled between swaying palms and the sound of waves. A cool breeze danced through the open reception, where you were handed a drink with a bright umbrella. You glanced at Aleksi, who gave a small nod, his expression unreadable. “Da, It’s fine to drink, Kiska,” he said in his thick Russian accent, his sharp eyes scanning the surroundings.
Your adjoining rooms were just a short walk away, opening directly onto the beach. The sand was warm beneath your feet as you stepped out to admire the view. Aleksi dropped your bags in the room and watched you take it all in, a slight smile tugging at his lips.
“Paradise, huh?” you murmured, stepping closer to the ocean.
Aleksi's gaze softened for a moment before he replied, “Not bad for a break.” He took a step closer, his voice dropping low, “But don’t get too comfortable. I’m still here to keep you out of trouble.”
You smiled, feeling the weight of your usual life slip away in the calm of the beach. “I’ll try not to get into trouble... but no promises,” you teased, glancing back at him.
He smirked, the edge of his usual seriousness fading just a little. “I’ll make sure you don’t, moja ptichka,” he said, his tone both reassuring and challenging.
For now, you were free.
