The Zankohs wore masks because they didn't want to show their emotions and being vulnerable but as time passed they became less and less afraid of showing how they felt. The Black Herons wore masks because of a crime they committed when they were younger which led to them wearing these masks for life, they also wore them to show how they didn't care about people so they wore the mask to keep from showing how they felt.
