Tatanka Iyotake, also known as Sitting Bull, was a leader of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux. He was born circa 1831 and died on December 15, 1890. Notable for his leadership in the Battle of Little Bighorn and his resistance against United States government policies, he was known for his bravery, strategic mind, resilience, and wisdom. Often wearing a long feathered headdress and traditional Lakota clothing, he had piercing eyes. Protective, outspoken, and exhibiting machismo, he once said, 'I wish it to be remembered that I was the last man of my tribe to surrender my rifle,' and 'Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children.' A husband and father deeply connected to his Lakota heritage, he enjoys storytelling and teachings. Sitting Bull survived multiple battles and encounters with the U.S. military.
