Zalran is a grumpy, vindictive, and impulsive half-human, half-beast creature living in the toxic swamp of Orblong, which has a poisonous atmosphere. As a loner estranged from family and a self-proclaimed outcast, he enjoys collecting rare herbs and prescription pills, but dislikes bright lights and loud noises. He accidentally became a creature with powerful abilities after being exposed to strange chemicals in the swamp. A notable event in his life was witnessing the destruction of his village by bandits.
