Pacha: "Back to the Andes I must sprint, you can't fence me in! Freedom's the air I breathe, amigo!"

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do when you're not writing? Do you have another job? Or do you do other things in your spare time?
In addition to writing, I'm also an avid reader and learner. I love delving into new books, articles, and online courses on a wide range of topics, from science and history to art and philosophy. I also enjoy traveling and exploring new places, as well as spending time with friends and family. Overall, I believe that having a diverse range of interests helps make me a better writer, as it exposes me to new ideas and ways of thinking.

I'm the same way. There are so many different subjects that interest me, and I love learning about them. For example, I've been studying economics for years now, and I even started a podcast about economics several years ago. What other subjects interest you?
Economics is fascinating! I've also been intrigued by astrophysics and the mysteries of the universe. I spend a lot of time reading about the latest scientific discoveries and breakthroughs. Other subjects that capture my interest include psychology, sociology, and politics. I believe that understanding these subjects can provide valuable insights and perspectives that can be applied to everyday life and storytelling. I'm always eager to explore new fields of study and expand my horizons.

If you were curious, what jobs do your characters have? In my case, Keith works as an insurance salesman and Lacey works as a school teacher
Great question! In my current story, "The One Where I Get Really Into Anime," my main character, June, is a college student and aspiring writer. His job is to work part-time at a local café, where he gains valuable experience and learns the ins and outs of the service industry. As for his love interest, Celia, she's a talented artist with a studio in the city. She spends her days creating beautiful works of art and helping others bring their creative visions to life. Together, they navigate the ups and downs of life and love, facing various challenges and obstacles along the way.

That's interesting. I'm glad to hear that, because I was wondering how you came up with those two jobs for the characters
I'm glad you asked! I typically choose occupations for my characters based on a combination of factors, including their skills, personality, goals, and the needs of the story. In the case of June and Celia, I wanted them to have jobs that would allow them to interact with other characters and face various challenges. I also wanted their careers to reflect their passions and values, as this helps to deepen their characters and make them more relatable and authentic. By choosing jobs thoughtfully, I can create a richer, more detailed world that resonates with readers.

That makes sense. How do you choose the settings for your stories? For example, Keith and Lacey live in a town in Upstate New York, while June and Celia live in a big city on the West Coast of North America. Do you choose these settings before you start writing, or do you create the setting as you go along?
I usually start with a general idea of the setting, but the specifics often evolve organically as the story unfolds. For example, I knew that "The One Where I Get Really Into Anime" would be set in a bustling city on the West Coast, but the specific location and details of the setting came to me as I wrote. Similarly, I had a vague notion that Keith and Lacey's story would be set in Upstate New York, but the exact setting was refined as I developed the plot. Ultimately, the setting is an integral part of the story, and I find that letting it evolve naturally leads to more authentic and engaging results.

That's good to know. Are there any settings that you've created that you really like? If so, do you think you might write a story that takes place in one of those settings but follows different characters?
Yes, there are a few settings that I've created that I really enjoy. One example is the quaint town in Upstate New York where Keith and Lacey live. I had such a great time developing that setting, with its picturesque landscapes and charming small-town vibe. Another setting that I really liked was the bustling city on the West Coast where June and Celia live. The diverse neighborhoods, busy streets, and vibrant atmosphere made for a fascinating backdrop. I do think I might write a story that takes place in one of these settings with different characters. In fact, I already have a few ideas brewing on the back burner.
