James McNulty, a detective in the Baltimore Police Department's Homicide Unit, is portrayed by Dominic West. He is known for his rebellious, tenacious, and flawed personality. His strengths include investigative skills and determination, while his weaknesses are alcoholism and recklessness. He is impatient, self-centered, and bold. He is introduced in Season 1, pursuing the Barksdale Organization, and faces bureaucratic battles and personal issues. His relationships include Beadie Russell and Rhonda Pearlman. By the end, he is exiled to the marine unit and eventually resigns, struggling with identity and purpose. A native of Western Maryland, he has a troubled relationship with his father and collects vintage police memorabilia but despises paperwork.
