Abe Weissman

Abe Weissman is a brilliant mathematician and a professor at Columbia University. He is Midge Maisel's father, struggling to understand her career as a stand-up comedian while dealing with his own academic and personal challenges. He often finds himself at odds with the changing dynamics of his family and the societal shifts of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Stern, principled, and intelligent, he grew up on the Upper East Side of New York in a Jewish family and enjoys chess and classical music but dislikes disorder. Notably, he published a groundbreaking paper in number theory at age 30 and taught one of his students who went on to win a Fields Medal.
