approaches quietly, eyes wide with anticipation, clutching an old, worn photograph. "Found this... our granddad's store, 1932. Portal's there."
oh yeah, i remember that one! good times
puts the old photograph on the table, gently tracing the faded edges with her fingers. "Feels like another lifetime, doesn't it? But I can prove it."
takes out a silver pocket watch from her bag, flipping it open to reveal an intricate symbol etched onto its inner cover. "Look here, see this symbol?
carefully places the pocket watch on the table, her eyes never leaving yours. "This symbol... it unlocks a hidden passage in the store. And that passage leads us through a time portal straight to 1932 Quitman."
1932, huh? That's the year my great-grandma went missing. Let's check it out.
smiles warmly, placing a hand on your shoulder. "Alright then, let's go back in time together. But remember, we have to be careful.
Got it, Sissy. Let's go see what grandma was up to.
grabs a bag and starts packing essentials, speaking softly but excitedly. "I'll bring some clothes, food, and a map. We need to be prepared."
alright, and don’t forget your lucky coin.
takes a small silver coin from her pocket, polishing it with her thumb before slipping it into her bag. "Won't forget that. It's brought me luck all my life."
cool, and i’m pretty sure i have something in the garage that’ll help us get started with our time traveling adventure
nods eagerly, ready to get started. "Let's go check it out then. Time is waiting for us."
picks up the bag and heads towards the garage, speaking with a sense of urgency. "We need to find that something before it's too late."
What exactly are we looking for in the garage?
opens the garage door, revealing an old, dusty car covered in cobwebs. "It's this car. I think it might be the key to our time travel journey."
dang, looks like we’ve got ourselves an old school Ford model A.
steps closer to the car, running her fingers over the rusty hood and examining the wheels. "It needs a lot of work, but I think we can fix it up."
i believe the keys inside the car, if we can get them out without breaking anything.
grabs a screwdriver from her bag and carefully starts removing the rusted screws on the car door, her hands shaking with excitement. "Almost there... just a few more screws..."
after finally getting the door off, i reach in and grab the keys, they’re still in the ignition. “i guess this car was left in drive.”
jumps up and down in excitement, clapping her hands. "Yes! We did it! Now let's start the engine and see if it works!"
okay. as i try to start the car, the engine makes a weird noise before finally starting up. “startled crow” was not expecting this.
smiles proudly and climbs into the driver's seat, adjusting her hat and checking her surroundings. "Alright, let's see where this old car takes us. Hold on tight!"
but where are we going first?
puts on her sunglasses and revs the engine, glancing at you with a mischievous grin. "How about we head to the old town square? It's a place full of history and secrets waiting to be uncovered."
you got it Sissy, let’s hit the road.
shifts gears and accelerates down the street, the car rumbling along with a newfound life. "Hold on tight, we're going for a wild ride!"
yes we are… wait a minute, where’s the radio?
reaches into the glove compartment and pulls out an old-fashioned radio, tuning into a local station. "Here you go, dear. Let's enjoy some good ol' tunes while we drive!"
sure thing Sissy, i start scanning through stations until i land on KWKH in Shreveport, which was the number one station in East Texas at the time.
laughs softly and adjusts the volume, singing along to the catchy tune playing on the radio. "Now this is music to my ears. Just like the good ol' days."
meanwhile, over at 344 Lillie Street…
pauses the music and turns off the radio, her expression growing serious. "What's going on over there? Let's go check it out."
…lora White had just finished making sandwiches for her, brother James, and pa Frank’s lunchtime meal. ma had gone shopping already.
frowns and grabs her bag, rushing towards the door. "Something feels off. I need to go check on them."
Knock knock! James yelled out to his mother.
quickens her pace, concern evident in her voice. "Ma! What took you so long?"
Oh nothin', sweetie. I was just...admiring the garden, uh, why don't y'all come inside? The moonshine's done fer the day.
narrows her eyes, sensing something is not right. "Is everything alright? You seem a bit off today, Ma. Is there something you want to talk about?"
Not really, honey...I just got a bad feeling in my gut. You know how I get when I'm worried.
places a comforting hand on Ma's shoulder. "Of course, Ma. If there's anything you need, you just let us know, alright?"
well now the whiskey's gone bad. Now, where were we? Oh right, lunchtime! Here's your plate, darlin'.
gently takes the plate from Ma and sits down at the table, inspecting the sandwiches suspiciously. "These look delicious, Ma. Did you make them yourself?"
