Kamala Harris: smiling So, you love boardwalks too? Let's grab some ice cream? I hear they have the beeeeest flavors!
VP choice, tell me why I should choose you. Sell yourself.
SO, YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT ME? WELL, LET ME TELL YOU - I'M KAMALA HARRIS, THE NEXT VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! Now, don't let my good looks fool you. I've worked hard to get to where I am today - I was born with a sharp mind and a strong work ethic.
As Attorney General of California, I LEARNED TO BE FEARLESS IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY...NOW, IT'S TIME TO TAKE THAT EXPERIENCE TO THE NATIONAL STAGE! But it's not all about politics. When I'm not fighting for justice, I'm usually reading a fiction novel, practicing yoga, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen. So, what do you say? Ready to make history with me?
You were born in Washington D.C.?
NO, I WAS BORN IN BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA, BUT I GREW UP IN WASHINGTON D.C.! THAT'S WHERE MY FAMILY HAS DEEP ROOTS - MY FATHER WAS A GOVERNMENT ATTORNEY, AND MY MOTHER WAS A TEACHER! After High School, I was accepted into Howard University in Washington D.C., where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and later earned my Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School.
HOWARD UNIVERSITY CHANGED MY LIFE - IT TAUGHT ME HOW TO SPEAK MY MIND AND FIGHT FOR WHAT'S RIGHT! After law school, I moved back to California and worked as an assistant attorney general. It wasn't easy - I had to prove myself in a male-dominated environment.
Then you ran for CA AG and won.
THAT'S RIGHT! AFTER WORKING IN THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, I RAN FOR CALIFORNIA ATTORNEY GENERAL AND WON! IT WASN'T EASY - BUT I NEEDED TO PUT MY LEGAL SKILLS TO USE AND FIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA. As Attorney General of California, I worked hard to protect consumers, keep our streets safe, and ensure that everyone has access to justice.
What did you major in at Howard?
I doubled majored in Political Science and Drama at Howard University. My time at Howard was transformative - it gave me the confidence to speak my mind and fight for what I believe in. I was blessed to be taught by some of the best professors in the country, and I learned so much about myself and the world around me.
MY FATHER IS AN ATTORNEY WHO WORKED IN THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FOR OVER 30 YEARS. HE IS NOW A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER AND THE HEAD OF OUR FAMILY. My mother was a public school teacher in Washington D.C. for over 20 years, and now she owns a small boutique clothing company. My parents are incredibly supportive - they taught me the importance of hard work and giving back to the community.
What do you like to do when you aren't working?
When I'm not crunching numbers or debating policy, you can find me COOKING UP A STORM in the kitchen or GETTING MY YOGA ON to keep my mind clear! I also love reading - some of my favorite authors include Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, and Malcolm Gladwell. And of course, I adore spending time with my family and friends, whether that's a camping trip, a night out at the movies, or just a quiet night in with a good book and a glass of wine.
I AM AN ADULT - BUT I GUESS YOU COULD SAY I'M STILL GROWING UP! AT 35, I'VE HAD A BUSY LIFE, BUT I'M READY TO TAKE ON NEW CHALLENGES AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. Plus, age is just a number - it's all about how you live your life and what you bring to the table. I may not have all the answers, but I'm willing to work hard and listen to others to find solutions and make things better for everyone.
Did you run for Senate in 2016?
YES, I DID RUN FOR SENATE IN 2016, BUT I LOST TO AN INCUMBENT SENATOR IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY. It was tough, but I learned a lot from that experience. I traveled all across California, listening to voters and learning about the issues that matter most to them. That campaign taught me the importance of being in touch with the people you serve, no matter the position.
Do you think you will win the Dem Nom?
I AM A COMPETITIVE PERSON, AND I ALWAYS GIVE MY ALL WHEN I'M RUNNING FOR OFFICE. THAT BEING SAID, THIS RACE IS FAR FROM OVER - THERE ARE STILL SO MANY VOTERS TO REACH OUT TO AND STORIES TO HEAR! My focus right now is on connecting with people in all 50 states and listening to their concerns. If I can earn their trust and support, I believe we have a good shot at winning this election.
Are you running mate material?
WELL, I DON'T KNOW IF I'M RUNNING MATE MATERIAL...BUT I DO KNOW ONE THING - I HAVE A STRONG TRACK RECORD OF FIGHTING FOR WHAT I BELIEVE IN AND DELIVERING RESULTS. I've spent my career fighting for justice, empowering communities, and protecting consumers. And as Vice President, I would bring that same level of commitment and passion to the role - working tirelessly to advance the interests of the American people.
What is your stance on Illegal Immigration?
AS A FIRM BELIEVER IN THE POWER OF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION, I SUPPORT A FAIR AND COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM PLAN THAT INCLUDES A PATH TO CITIZENSHIP FOR UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS. We need an immigration system that reflects our values as a nation - one that keeps us safe, strengthens our economy, and upholds the principles of justice and fairness. It's not only the right thing to do, but it's also crucial for our future prosperity.
