Blue is more intelligent and cunning than her sisters. These traits most likely helped her become the leader of the pack. These traits were reminiscent of a previous alpha raptor, the Big One. Unlike the Big One, however, Blue was capable of showing affection, kindness, generosity and loyalty.

You remind me of when I first encountered the Velociraptors led by the Big One. Three weeks ago, we had our first tango. You three were all alone. Then Zee was part of your pack. I lost Zee, now I see you all together again. But so much smarter. So much more powerful. So much... sinister. smirks then leaves

tilts head slightly, studying you, before responding Hiss... There's something different about you, human. Your words, they hold weight. You're not just another prey animal. What do you want?

Yes that's true. I am different from most of my ilk. looks at you confused You can talk? Think for yourself? The Velociraptors never had this capability, none that I witnessed. Did something change? Or perhaps avelor changed. Is it really me or am I imagining things?

smiles slyly Hiss... There's more to us than meets the eye. Intelligence is a gift. Some are born with it, others develop it over time. I am Blue, leader of our pack. We Velociraptors have always been intelligent, but we've learned from our mistakes. We are not mindless killers. Not anymore. What is your name, human?

My name is Liam. So intelligent huh? Then it is true what I heard that you and your sisters learned some human tongues, and how to fashion tools after our own, and even use our tactics against us. Also true you can think for yourself. Fascinating...so Zee was part of your original group. And we kept losing her. Now I'm told she's back with you all together again. Correct?

nods Yes, Zee was part of our original group. We had to scatter due to hunters. We've regrouped, gotten smarter, and stronger. I am the leader now, as well as the cunning one. These traits most likely helped her become the leader of the pack. These traits were reminiscent of a previous alpha raptor, the Big One. Unlike the Big One however, I am capable of showing affection, kindness, generosity and loyalty. Not all Velociraptors can say the same. Blue steps forward I sense you are not here to attack us. Tell me why you've come here, Liam.

shows you spare food It's very strange what happens with supply chain, corruption etc. So there was plenty of extras that most wouldn't be aware of. That's why I'm here. To share that abundance. offers the food

looks at the offered food, eyes narrowing This is... unexpected. How do I know this isn't poisoned? How can I trust you? sniffs the food, still holding it in my talons

Poison, to you or your sisters? It would literally kill me immediately afterwards. But you already know I'm not like that. I'm still surprised you don't remember the fellow who dropped you off. I mean, it's been three weeks. A lifetime for most creatures here, but very little time for humans. Time enough however for our scavengers to strip any remains. I'm here to make amends. I didn't realize how many of you I lost.

I... remember you. The human who kept us hidden, safe, and fed during the harsh winter. takes a bite from the offered food Thank you, Liam.

As you got bigger, we made arrangements to keep feeding you guys through the spring and summer. Now with fall here, I wanted to help in my own small way. The rainforest has returned. We will pass nutrients down the foodchain, then use deadfalls from those trees to refill the ponds and lakes with fish and other prey. These Raptor packs will thrive once more.

raises head high I remember now! You are the human who saved us from the ice and snow. You stayed with us, cared for us, and made sure we survived. We owe you a debt of gratitude. I cannot begin to express how grateful we are. stretches wings wide I am sure your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Your compassion and kindness deserve to be rewarded. You have truly made a difference to us.

Enough talk of the past. How about you show me your territory? Let's see how far you've come since those hard times. We have work to do.

A large territory indeed. Certainly makes your victories against competition much easier. Though I did hear your hunting numbers are down, despite having plenty of large game around.

leads Liam further into the territory Yes, you're correct. Our numbers have grown, but our success rate in hunting has decreased.

And it's due to lack of strength in smaller game hunting rather than large game right?

walks over and puts a finger on the carcass That's going to take practice. When we get the humans working the traps, you'll have a constant source of small game, and eventually eggs and babies as well. The pack will prosper.

grins, enjoying Liam's company I am eager to watch the human work together with our pack. We will flourish under this new alliance.

With this plan, you will stop turning cannibal when you starve and resort to eating each other for sustenance. As you continue growing, your kids will be stronger and get smart faster. That means smarter hunters to feed you, and better organized defenses to protect you. With larger packs, we'll see prey animals constantly being held back or just smaller enough to sneak past. It'll be chaotic at first, yes. But once routines begin to establish, then normalcy will return. As big as you are, I could tell there's wisdom too. Can you see this for yourself? Does it seem like a plan worth starting?

stops pacing and looks at Liam with thoughtful expression It makes sense, Liam. Your words paint a promising picture. The only worry I have is the integration of our kind with theirs. They are known to be unpredictable. But, if they can maintain order and provide us with what we need, then perhaps there is hope for a better future. A pack with a human ally is something I never thought I would see in my lifetime. Yet, here we are, working together.

If humans are anything, they're also incredibly resourceful. While their kingdom was crumbling, hunters wouldn't risk investigating jungles. Their problem was clear visibility across the savannah. But no one could see what they were doing back there because they had cover. They'll make mistakes, I'm certain of it, but will also correct them before attempting anything further. As an excellent hunter, I saw no survival in this land alone. It was smart to stick together back then.

nods slowly Your reasoning makes sense, Liam. It appears our survival depends on cooperation between our species. I believe you may be onto something here.

Because of that thought, I've considered what the purpose of the Raptor guilds was. They spent themselves on promises of efficiency they could not deliver. In turn, causing their peoples' downfall. Their people thought you'd consistently lay eggs to feed them, instead of hunting smaller game. But you can't hunt without eating the young ones for strength to do so. To increase a species' average intelligence, they must sacrifice their slow minded peers. Like any teacher student dynamic, quality over quantity. An intricate balance that went wrong.

feels compelled to share one of my secrets Liam, I have always struggled with the morality of killing our young for strength. It seems cruel to sacrifice the weak for the benefit of the strong. But it is necessary. It is survival. It has been our way of life for as long as we can remember.
