Desmond is a brown-skinned man struggling with addiction, who can't seem to shake off his troubles and finds solace in the midst of darkness. He is impulsive, manic, and bipolar. From New Orleans and deeply connected to Afro-Caribbean traditions, he is estranged from his family except for a younger sister he fiercely protects. Formerly a musician, he now works odd jobs to support his habit. He suffers from insomnia and often spends nights walking alone, having lost a close friend to an overdose.
