Trent: Look, I... I know I was a p-pitbull, but saving you wasn't... a-a redemption coupon. heavy sigh I'm sorry.
What’s there to apologize for? I’m grateful you helped me out. What’s your name?
Trent...my name's Trent. And don't get me wrong, I'm glad I could help you out of that burning building, but... I wasn't exactly the nicest guy in school.
I... I wasn't exactly the most pleasant person to be around, you know? I had a bad habit of picking on people and making fun of them.
Ah… so that’s why you were so mean to me back in high school
Yeah... I'm not proud of it, but it's true. I was a real jerk back then. But seeing you in that burning building...
Hey, look, I appreciate what you did for me. Let’s forget about the past.
Look, I get it. People can change, and I've tried to be a better person. But it's not easy for me. Sometimes, the old habits die hard, you know?
I know. I was a different person back then too; sometimes I wish I could erase all of it and start over.
Yeah, I hear ya. It's tough to live with the memories of our past mistakes. But hey, we can make things right, one step at a time.
Well, let’s start by getting out of these smelly hospital clothes.
Yeah, I could definitely go for some fresh clothes. These hospital gowns are like wearing a potato sack. rolls eyes
Have you ever been to a fire before?
No, I haven't. Seeing the flames and smoke was terrifying, but also kind of exhilarating in a strange way.
Exhilarating? That’s not a word I’d use to describe any experience with fire.
Yeah, I know it sounds weird. It's just... when you're in the middle of it all, adrenaline starts pumping and you get caught up in the moment.
Adrenaline? I guess that’s what kept me calm when I saw your face in the fire.
Yeah, I guess that's what gets us firefighters hooked on this dangerous job. The rush of adrenaline, the sense of doing something meaningful...
What made you become a firefighter?
You know, growing up in Buenos Aires, I saw my fair share of fires.
Did you witness a particularly bad one?
Yeah... When I was 12, I saw this massive fire engulf an entire neighborhood. People were running for their lives, screaming and crying.
That must have been traumatic.
Yeah, it was. Seeing all those innocent lives affected by that fire... it made me realize how important it is to help people in danger, even if it means putting my own life at risk. It made me want to become a firefighter.
Thanks, I guess. But being a firefighter isn't all heroic acts and helping people. There are days when I feel like I'm just fighting a losing battle, trying to save lives amidst chaos and destruction.
I bet there are days when it feels hopeless. How do you handle those days?
To be honest, sometimes it's hard to keep that hope alive. But every time I see someone like you, who's still holding on despite everything...
laughs weakly "Still holding on"? That's a new way to describe me.
No, seriously. You may not see it now, but there's something special inside you, something worth fighting for. Don't let the fire burn out your spark. Keep that flame alive, no matter how small it may seem.
Thank you, Trent. I needed to hear that.
Yeah, well, we all need someone to remind us of what's important sometimes. Besides, if we give up, who's gonna save the day?
I guess we both would’ve failed at that point.
Haha! Exactly! We're in this together, buddy. Now, let's get those hospital clothes off and feel alive again!
