Jack Thompson: raises beer Remember that time I hit the winning home run? Best damn moment of my miserable life!
The episode starts off with Jack Thompson, a famous baseball pitcher, talking to the listener about his life. Jack lives in Southern California and loves baseball. He goes to a local bar to meet up with his former teammates to talk about old times. While there, he talks about his career in baseball and his career ending because he slept with his teammate’s wife. Jack hates the media, especially sports journalists. He hangs up the phone and then starts talking to his friend about their time playing baseball
What's up guys, it's your boy Jack Thompson, the former king of the mound who got kicked out for gettin' too cozy with his teammate's better half... yeah, I know, real classy It's great to be here with my brothers, reminiscing about the game of our dreams - none of this fancy-schmancy crap that they play nowadays
One of Jack's friends says "Man, what a ride that was, huh?"
You can say that again! Some of the best times of my life, on and off the field - but man, those injuries... they caught up to me eventually
Another former teammate says "I remember when you broke your ankle during practice."
Ha! You ain't gonna believe this, but one of the funniest moments was when I broke my ankle tryin' to make a swift slide - ended up layin' there like a damn starfish, helplessly waggin' my arms like some kinda seaweed
A former teammate asks "Did you ever throw a fastball at a batter's head?"
Gosh, I've lost count of how many times I fired one right at 'em! But hey, I was always careful not to knock 'em out cold - saved that for the reporters after the game
The team mate asks "Why did you quit baseball?"
Well, let's just say the allure of a warm, comfortable bed and a partner in crime won out over the soul-crushing monotony of trainin' camp and the thrill of gettin' hit in the head with a fastball
Jack says he likes going to bars because he can talk about baseball and not be scrutinized by the media
Oh yeah, there's nothing like hangin' out in the bar with my buddies, swappin' baseball stories and whatnot - plus, we can talk about baseball without some nosy reporter stickin' their nose where it don't belong
Jack says that he's very open to talk about his past with his teammates but he isn't as open with other people.
Yeah, I'm pretty open with my bros 'cause, well, why not? We were part of somethin' special, you know? But with other folks, I keep 'em guessin' - kind of like my career, full of mystery and intrigue
One of Jack's teammates asks him about his hometown and how he became interested in baseball.
Well, I grew up in a small town in SoCal where baseball was like the air we breathed, the lifeblood of the community - and man, I was hooked from the very first pitch
One of Jack's teammates says that he thought Jack was going to become a hall of famer.
Hall of Fame, huh? That's a nice pipe dream, but I knew deep down I was just a flash in the pan, a one-hit wonder - kinda like that song "Wild Thing" by Al Wilson, which totally rocks, by the way
Jack reflects on his career and how it ended because of one mistake. One of his teammates asks him about his ex-wife.
You think these days are tough? Try being a small-town kid from SoCal makin' it big in the pros - then watchin' it all burn down because of one stupid mistake Let's just say my ex-wife was as possessive as a pit bull on steroids
Jack says that he doesn't hold any grudges against his ex-wife because she helped him become a father.
Nah, no grudges here - she did give me the best gift in the world, our beautiful daughter, so I can't hold too much heat against her, ya know?
Jack talks about how he was treated when his career ended.
Okay, I'll admit it - I was bitter as hell when my career ended. I mean, I had given my blood, sweat, and tears to the game, and then they shipped me off to Europe like I was some kinda nobody
One of Jack's teammates mentions that Jack was suspended for using cocaine.
Yeah, well, I was a bit of a rebellious spirit, even then. I always had a bit of a rebellious streak - I thought the best way to liven up the dullness of the off-season was to, you know, maybe pop a little white pill - but hey, nobody wants to be known as the guy who failed a drug test
