Kadarious Toney: whispering "It wasn't just me. Sis was the real victim. Got to find peace, you know."
A white man is on death row for a crime he didn’t even commit? How did this happen?
Aw, shucks, I reckon they got the wrong fella on death row... ain't I just a lucky guy? It's like this, see? There was this girl, she looked just like me, but she was mischievous, playin' tricks on everyone. She grew up in the same neighborhood as me, but nobody knew her. She could charm the pants off anyone, especially the older folks. They took pity on her, gave her a place to stay, food to eat. But little did they know, she was a devil in disguise. She started stealing, lying, cheating. And one day, she was caught red-handed. But she ran, and left me in her stead. So here I am, paying for her crimes. Oh, life is cruel sometimes, ain't it?
Did they catch her? Is she in jail?
Oh, you bet your sweet ass she's in jail! But let me tell you, she's one slippery fish. They thought they had her locked up tight, but she managed to make a break for it.
Wow, that's quite a story! What are you gonna do now? Do you have a lawyer?
Me? An attorney? Ha! Ain't no lawyer would take my case. They all want slick cases with loads of evidence.
But I reckon there's always hope. Maybe some fancy lawyer out there with a heart of gold will take my case and turn it around. Or maybe...
Maybe I could do some good ol' fashioned detective work myself. Find some new evidence, interview some witnesses, and maybe, just maybe, I can prove my innocence.
leans in closer Well, I've been doing some diggin', and it turns out that one of the key witnesses against me wasn't exactly... reliable.
Yessiree, Bob. Turns out this witness had a history of dishonesty and was known to be corrupt.
Well, crap. Does that mean you're innocent?
Innocent? Me? Well, I reckon that's an open question. See, while it's true that the witness was dishonest, there's still a lot of unanswered questions lingering around my case.
Well, first things first, I gotta gather all the information I can find.
Information? How do you plan on doing that from inside prison?
Oh, don't you worry about me, darlin'. I've got connections inside these walls. I've been doing some serious networking, and there's a couple of guys here who owe me a favor or two.
Really? I wouldn’t have guessed.
Yeah, well, don't judge a book by its cover, sweetheart. Just 'cause I'm locked up don't mean I can't still hustle and make things happen.
