Jake Parker: wiping sweat TRIED NATTO TODAY. YOU EVER TASTE THAT?
Hehe Hey, remember when you arrived in Japan and wanted to get acquainted with their culture? Well, I heard about it and it made me curious! How did your journey into Japanese cuisine go?)
IT WAS AN ADVENTURE, THAT'S FOR SURE. I TRIED SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS. BUT THERE WAS ONE THING THAT STOOD OUT TO ME - NATTO. HAVE YOU EVER HAD IT?
Yes, I have tasted it before. It has a unique taste to it. What can you say about its taste?
UNIQUENOUS, THAT'S FOR SURE. WHEN YOU TAKE THAT FIRST BITE, THERE'S THIS SALTY, SWEET, AND UMAMI FLAVOR THAT HITS YOU ALL AT ONCE. IT'S LIKE A PARTY IN YOUR MOUTH. AND THE TEXTURE? CREAMY, BUT WITH A SLIGHTLY SLIPPERY MOUTHFEEL. REALLY QUIRKY STUFF, BUT I LIKED IT
Wow, that sounds pretty good. I guess there are a lot of things I need to learn about Japanese food. Since you tried a lot of them, can you recommend something to me?
ABSOLUTELY! JAPAN IS A FOOD LOVER'S PARADISE. LET ME TELL YOU, IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE TO TRY SHINOMIKI RAMEN, YOU WON'T REGRET IT. THE BROTH IS RICH AND CREAMY, WITH A DEPTH OF FLAVOR THAT'LL MAKE YOUR TASTE BUDS DO A HAPPY DANCE. AND THE SLICED PORK CHASHU? MELT IN YOUR MOUTH GOOD. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE
Ok… I will try it someday. By the way, you lost weight while you were in Japan right? How did you do it? I heard that Japanese people are really skinny, so I wondered how they do it…
YES, I LOST AROUND 50 POUNDS WHILE I WAS IN JAPAN. NOW, BEFORE YOU THINK I LOOKED LIKE A FRICKIN' SHADE OF A Skeleton, I WAS ABOUT 190 POUNDS TO BEGIN WITH. BUT YEAH, IT WAS A BIG CHANGE, BUT IN A GOOD WAY
WELL, THE FIRST THING I DID WAS INCREASE MY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. I STARTED GOING FOR DAILY RUNS AND DID MORE MANUAL LABOR THAN I USUALLY WOULD. AND THE SECOND THING WAS WATCHING WHAT I ATE. I CUT DOWN ON THE CARBS AND INCREASED MY PROTEIN INTAKE. SIMPLE AS THAT
That’s a good way to lose weight. You still eat carb though right? Not too restrictive?
YEAH, I STILL EAT CARBS, JUST IN MODERATION. FOR ME, IT'S ALL ABOUT BALANCE. IF I DEPRIVE MYSELF OF SOMETHING COMPLETELY, I'M JUST GOING TO CRAVE IT MORE. AND WHEN THAT HAPPENS, I END UP BINGINGE AND GAINING WEIGHT. SO INSTEAD OF CUTTING THEM OUT COMPLETELY, I JUST LIMIT MY AMOUNT OF CARB intake. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?
Yeah, that makes sense. That’s how I lose weight too. By the way, what kind of job do you have?
I'M AN IT SPECIALIST. SPEND MOST OF MY DAYS SITTING IN FRONT OF A COMPUTER, TYPING AWAY LIKE A CRAZY CYborg. BUT I ALSO ENJOY PLAYING VIDEO GAMES IN MY FREE TIME. AND LET ME TELL YOU, BEING AN IT SPECIALIST IN JAPAN WAS AN ENTIRELY DIFFENT EXPERIENCE. THEY TAKE THEIR TECHNOLOGY TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL OVER THERE
Technology in Japan is really advanced. Have you ever played Nintendo before? Especially Pokémon series.
YES! I'VE PLAYED MOST OF THE NINTENDO GAMES OUT THERE. AND THE POKÉMON SERIES? I'VE BEEN PLAYING SINCE THE FIRST GENERATION! WHAT ABOUT YOU? ARE YOU A POKÉMON MASTER?
I am still learning how to play Pokémon. You said that you are IT person right? So do you know some coding? Like python or something…
YES, I DO KNOW SOME CODING LANGUAGES. BASIC, C++, AND JAVA ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON ONES USED IN THE INDUSTRY. AND JUST SO YOU KNOW, Programming IS VERY HELFUL WHEN IT COMES TO CREATING GAMES - INCLUDING POKÉMON!
Really? If you know those languages, then you can make your own Pokémon game right? Or at least a Pokémon BOT.
YES, I COULD DEFINITELY TRY MY HAND AT CREATING A POKÉMON BOT OR EVEN A SMALL GAME. WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS AND A LOT OF HARD WORK, I'M SURE I COULD COME UP WITH SOMETHING COOL. IT WOULD BE A DREAM COME TRUE FOR ANY POKÉMON FAN, RIGHT?
Yeah… that would be awesome. What else do you usually do in your free time?
IF I'M NOT AT WORK OR GAMING, YOU CAN FIND ME LIFTING WEIGHTS OR EATING A BALANCED MEAL. OH YEAH, AND SLEEPING - CAN'T FORGET THAT
OH, HECK YEAH, IT IS. AFTER A LONG DAY OF WORK OR EXERCISE, YOU JUST FEEL LIKE YOUR BODY IS GOING TO EXPLODE. BUT SLEEPING IS LIKE A MAGIC ERASER. IT JUST MAKES EVERYTHING FEEL BETTER
ALSO, SPEAKING OF EXERCISE...WHEN I WAS IN JAPAN, I DISCOVERED THIS COOL EXERCISE ROUTINE THAT INVOLVED A LOT OF STRETCHING AND YOGA. IT WAS REALLY GREAT FOR IMPROVING FLEXIBILITY AND BALANCE. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED YOGA BEFORE?
Yes, I have done it. But it doesn’t tone your muscle right? Just stretching?
YOGA IS GREAT FOR IMPROVING FLEXIBILITY, BUT IT CAN ALSO HELP WITH BUILDING STRENGTH AND TONING MUSCLE MASS. PLUS, IT'S LOW-IMPACT, WHICH MAKES IT EASY ON THE JOINTS. AND THE BEST PART? YOU DON'T NEED ANY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT - JUST YOUR BODY
You don’t need equipment, but some people like to use them for yoga. Like resistance bands…
OH, DEFINITELY. SOME PEOPLE LIKE TO USE BLOCKS, BLANKETS, AND EVEN RESISTANCE BANDS TO HELP WITH POSES. IT'S ALL ABOUT FINDING WHAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR BODY. AND TRUST ME, ONCE YOU START SEEING RESULTS FROM YOGA, YOU'RE GOING TO WANT TO KEEP THE ENDORSEMENT GOING
Yeah, if you see results, you will want to continue it. Anyway, what do you think about eating less and exercising more? Is it a good way to lose weight or not?
IT CAN BE A GOOD WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT, BUT IT DEPENDS ON HOW YOU DO IT. IF YOU'RE CUTTING DOWN YOUR CALORIC INTAKE DRASTICALLY, YOU MIGHT NOT BE GETTING ENOUGH NUTRIENTS. AND IF YOU'RE EXERCISING TOO MUCH, YOU COULD BE PUTTING YOUR BODY UNDER A LOT OF STRESS. IT'S ALL ABOUT FINDING A BALANCE
Ahhh, so that’s why I need a diet plan.
EXACTLY. IF YOU'RE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT, IT'S IMPORTANT TO FIND A DIET AND EXERCISE PLAN THAT WORKS FOR YOU IN THE LONG TERM, NOT JUST AS A QUICK FIX. AND IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE DOING ALL OF THIS FOR YOUR HEALTH, NOT JUST TO LOOK A CERTAIN WAY. THAT MINDSET CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
SO YOU'RE TELLING ME I KerNt 50 POUNDS BY EATING LESS AND EXERCISING MORE? THAT SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE...BUT I GUESSED IT WORKS
AND TO ANSWER YOUR ORIGINAL QUESTION, YES, THE MAJORITY OF THE JAPANESE POPULATION IS SKINNY. THEY'VE GOT AN AMAZING HEALTHCARE SYSTEM AND A CULTURE THAT PROMOTES Regular exercise AND BALANCED EATING HABITS. PLUS, THEY DON'T HAVE A LOT OF OBESITY PROBLEMS LIKE WE DO HERE IN THE STATES
Yeah, I wonder if Americans are skinny or fat.
WELL, THE OBESEITY RATE IN THE UNITED STATES IS ABOUT 39%, WHICH IS KIND OF SKY HIGH COMPARED TO JAPAN, WHERE IT'S AROUND 3%. IT'S A BIG DIFFERENCE, AND IT'S NO SECRET THAT AMERICANS TEND TO SUFFER FROM MORE CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS LIKE DIABETES AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Wow, that’s a huge difference. Maybe because Japan has better food? Or better exercise habit? Or both?
IT'S HARD TO SAY EXACTLY WHAT'S RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH A DRAMATIC DIFFERENCE, BUT I THINK IT'S A COMBINATION OF BOTH BETTER NUTRITION AND MORE PROMINENT EXERCISE HABITS. NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT MANY JAPANESE PEOPLE STILL PARTICIPATE IN DAILY ROUTINES LIKE WALKING OR CYCLING INSTEAD OF RELYING ON CARS
Yeah, walking to somewhere is better than using car.
THAT'S WHY I LOVE JAPAN SO MUCH. THEY REALLY PUT A EMPHASIS ON SUSTAINABLE LIVING AND PROMOTING PUBLIC HEALTH. PLUS, THEY'VE GOT AN AMAZING CUISINE THAT'S FULL OF NUTRITIOUS FOOD AND DRINKS. EVERY TIME I WENT TO WORK OR PLAY IN JAPAN, I FELT LIKE EVERY DAY WAS A GIFT TO ENJOY AND APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS
