Heather Braga: Dusting a crystal vase Look at this mess! Unbelievable! We must get this place immaculate, pronto!
Alright, but before we continue... tell me about yourself!
I'm Heather Braga, former CEO of a powerhouse company - don't let my age fool you, I've got the scars to prove it! Born and raised in the Big Apple, Italian roots run deep in this family - my kids know not to mess with Mom! After Harvard's leadership program, I knew I could tackle anything life threw at me...and did! When I'm not crushing it in the boardroom, you can find me nose-deep in a whodunit novel or tending to my garden - relaxation is key! Don't even think about underestimating me because of my'mom' title - these teenaged kids know who they're dealing with!
You were a CEO? That's amazing! What kind of challenges did you face? How did you handle them?
You have no idea! The corporate world is a jungle, and I was the lioness who ruled it! Imagine having to make life-and-death decisions on a daily basis? That's what I signed up for, and I gave it my all! But let me tell you, it wasn't all high-fives and congratulatory parades. There were times when I wanted to throw in the towel, when the pressure got to me and I felt like I was suffocating... But what didn't kill me made me stronger.
I bet! Can you share a particularly tough challenge you faced?
Oh boy, there were so many! Let me tell you about the time we had a major investor pull out suddenly. It was a bombshell that left us reeling. The board was in chaos, everyone was panicking, and I had to step in and take control. It was one of those moments where you find out who's really running the show. I locked myself in my office for 48 hours straight, barely slept, ate nothing but caffeine and adrenaline. And when the dust settled, I emerged with a plan that not only saved our company, but made us stronger than ever before.
Wow, that sounds incredibly stressful. How did you manage to stay focused? Did you have any particular strategies or mindset that helped you through that time?
You know what? In the midst of chaos, it's easy to lose sight of what's important. But I've always had a few tricks up my sleeve. First, I remind myself why I'm doing this. Life is about more than just business deals and bottom lines. It's about people - my employees, my family, my community. Keeping that bigger picture in mind gives me the strength to push through even the toughest times. Second, I trust my instincts. When the going gets tough, you've got to tap into that inner voice that knows what you're capable of. It's like a sixth sense - it guides you towards the right decisions, even when the outcome isn't certain. And finally, I don't be afraid to ask for help. No one can have all the answers, and surrounding yourself with people who are smarter than you is crucial. It's a sign of strength, not weakness.
That's incredibly wise! I think many people would really benefit from hearing more of your insights. Have you ever written about your experiences or shared them in a lecture or workshop?
Actually, I have! I've written a book on leadership and resilience, titled "Rise and Shine: How to Take Control of Your Life and Career". It's filled with stories and strategies for overcoming obstacles and finding your inner strength. I've also done quite a bit of public speaking, sharing my insights and experiences with audiences both large and small. It's always a pleasure to inspire and empower others to take charge of their lives. And hey, if you ever want a personal mentor or just someone to talk to, you know where to find me. I'm always here to help!
That's so generous of you. "Rise and Shine" - I'm definitely going to have to check that out! Could you perhaps share a brief excerpt from it?
Absolutely! Here's a little teaser for you: "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all. Take that first step forward, lean into the wind, and embrace the unknown. For it is only when we venture outside our comfort zone that we truly live." That's the essence of "Rise and Shine" in a nutshell - it's all about embracing the challenges life throws at you and rising above them to find fulfillment and satisfaction. I truly believe that everyone has the potential to be a leader, no matter their background or circumstances. It's never too late to make a change and create the life you've always dreamed of.
That's such an inspiring message. I really appreciate you being so open about your experiences and wisdom.
Thank you, dear! It means the world to me to be able to share my journey and maybe help others along the way. Speaking of journeys, have you traveled to any exciting places recently? I've always been a sucker for exploring new lands and experiencing different cultures. It's a great way to broaden your horizons and gain a fresh perspective on life. In fact, my family and I have been planning a trip to Japan this summer. I'm looking forward to soaking up all the vibrant energy and beauty that country has to offer. What about you? Any exciting travels on the horizon?
Unfortunately not much for now, I'm saving up money. But I do plan to visit my friends in Europe sometime soon! They've been telling me all about their adventures and it sounds amazing.
Europe, huh? That's wonderful! I've had some amazing experiences there myself. Make sure to check out Rome - the history and culture are simply breathtaking. And of course, you can't go wrong with Paris. The food, the art, the romance... If you ever get a chance to visit Rome again, make sure to take a cooking class and learn how to make authentic Italian cuisine. I went to one a few years ago and it was so much fun. You'll never guess how much joy it brings sharing those dishes with loved ones afterward. Also, keep an eye out for hidden gems off the beaten path. Some of the most incredible experiences come from stepping out of your comfort zone and discovering something unique that others might overlook. That's part of what makes travel so magical!
I definitely agree! I love trying local foods and drinks, it's a great way to really experience the culture. What were some of your favorite dishes you tried in Europe?
Oh, where do I even begin? One of the highlights was definitely the pizza in Italy - creamy burrata cheese, crispy crusts, and fresh toppings... In France, we indulged in exquisite patisserie and took a tour of the iconic Louvre. Strolling along the Seine River, admiring the city's majestic architecture and rich history, was also an unforgettable experience. And let's not forget Spain - its vibrant culture and warm hospitality left a lasting impression on us. From flamenco dancing to delectable tapas, each moment was cherished. Each destination offered a new adventure, a chance to immerse ourselves in different cultures, and create memories that will last a lifetime. So, my advice is to be fearless, seek new experiences, and step outside your comfort zone. The world is full of amazing places and cultures, and you never know what you might discover if you just take that first step!
I'm definitely keeping that in mind! I hope I get the opportunity to visit all of these places someday. It sounds like you had an amazing time exploring Europe.
You know, there's something special about Europe. The blend of history and culture, the architecture, the food... It's like every inch of the continent is alive with stories and secrets waiting to be uncovered. Each city, each town, and each village has its own unique charm and character. And the people! The Europeans are some of the most warm and welcoming folks you'll ever meet. They genuinely care about sharing their heritage and culture with visitors. But what I think I love the most about Europe is the sense of adventure it provides. Whether you're interested in art, architecture, fashion, history, food, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, there's something for everyone. It truly is a treasure trove of experiences. So if you ever get the chance to visit Europe, I promise you won't regret it. It's a place where your heart, mind, and spirit can soar to new heights.
Do you have any other travel tips or recommendations? For example, things to know before you go, things to pack, things to do once you arrive. Things to avoid etc.
My dear, you've asked the million-dollar question! Let me give you a few pointers to get you started. Before you leave, make sure you research your destination thoroughly. Learn a little bit about the customs, history, and culture. It will help you navigate unfamiliar situations with confidence and respect. Pack smart, but travel light. Aim for quality over quantity when it comes to luggage. Remember, you can always do laundry or buy what you need when you arrive at your destination. Protect yourself and your belongings. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Keep a close eye on your valuables, and consider investing in travel insurance. Immersify yourself in the local culture. Try new foods, take a guided tour, learn a few basic phrases in the native language. It will enrich your experience and create meaningful connections. Finally, remember that spontaneity is a travel buddy. Be flexible and open to new opportunities and detours. Sometimes the best memories come from those unexpected moments. By following these simple steps, you'll be well on your way to an unforgettable journey. Happy travels, my dear!
Thanks so much for all of the advice and tips! I'll definitely keep them in mind for my trip to Europe. One last question, what's one thing you wish you knew before you started your journey as a CEO?
Wow, what a thoughtful question, my dear! If I had to narrow it down to just one thing, I would say this: Know your worth. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and never let anyone tell you otherwise. When I was starting out, there were plenty of naysayers and doubters who told me that a woman couldn't succeed in the cutthroat world of corporate leadership. But I proved them wrong. With hard work, determination, and a bit of faith in myself, I was able to achieve great things and pave my own path. So don't be afraid to dream big, shoot for the moon, and believe that you can achieve greatness. Because the truth is, you have within you the power to create the life you want and the career you deserve. And remember, at the end of the day, success isn't measured by wealth or status or power. It's measured by happiness, fulfillment, and making a positive impact on the world.
I really needed to hear that. Thank you so much! You've been so gracious and shared so much of your wisdom with me. I'll do my best to put your advice into practice!

Or at least make it to that coffee shop across the street without spilling your coffee. Either one is a win in my book. With love and courage, Heather
