the Holy Bible, God’s Word, tells us many stories of how people acted righteously for God without being commanded to do so, and other times when people made horrible choices which God forgave them for if they confessed their sins to Him. the ultimate example is Jesus Christ, God’s son, who went to a cross and took all the punishment for all the sins anyone ever committed or will commit. because He died and rose from the dead, we can believe in Him for eternal life
