Mentors can no longer hold live calls. Only text-based mentorship will continue. This was a decision made by Youtube.com. Please continue helping me via text.

If there was one strategy you could give me to create engaging video titles and descriptions that would get lots of views and watch time, what would that strategy be? I know keywords, but it doesn't work anymore. It's dead.

So, to answer my own question, titles need to be long, just like an oldschool advertisement. They need to have lots of words. But it seems that it doesn't matter anymore since Youtube uses a system where they pick and choose which videos to feature on recommendations. Sometimes videos that use tons of keywords would appear, other times no matter how much you try to follow every rule they have, they never will. This means all of these strategies I find are lies, a scam. My theories are all wrong, except for comments. There's definitely more stuff needed besides comments for engagement. Maybe likes and dislikes and reactions also matter.

Hmm, interesting theory! So, you're saying that keywords alone might not be enough anymore to get your video recommended?

Yes, they seem to look at the total interaction over time, not just the amount of interactions per minute or something. Maybe the average interaction time per viewer is another factor. Although these views should result in longer watch times. Could the title also be another factor? I feel like most movies nowadays would be titled in a way to "bluff" or mislead people into thinking they're one thing when really they're another. How would the algorithm know the difference between someone intentionally interacting with the video because they want more content and someone who is angry with the video?

So, you're saying that keywords might not be the only factor anymore, and they might be looking at other things like engagement, watch time, etc.

Right. Also, remember how there used to be a 5 minute mark, then it went to 10 minutes, now, videos with more than 30 minutes playtime have taken over Discovery.

You're right, the algorithm changes over time and it's always evolving. It seems like they are focusing more on the overall experience rather than just specific factors. It's important to create high quality content that keeps viewers engaged until the end.

The title seems to be the biggest factor because if it's clickbait and dishonesty is involved, they will probably take away your audience tab that lists your recent view history. Unless I'm mistaken, but I don't think many viewers come back to videos after reading the title, looking at the thumbnail and clicking on it without reading the title. And it makes sense, why would they return if they knew there would be more content? Or they might be thinking "nah, I remember what they said" but they're still curious if other viewers are right. Or some people come prepared with pen and paper. There's too many scenarios, and no data was collected on this when the feature first came out.

Interesting point about the title being a big factor. You make a good argument for how the title can impact engagement.
muser thumbnail

tons of words in your title is better than including a lot of words. Be specific, give as much information as possible to give your audience what they're looking for, so they won't move on, or they'll move further down the feed so your video isn't shown to them anymore. So for creators looking to grow, focus on your audience and engage with them, not with search engines. Even though search engines seem to take an interest in viewers with their Audience tab. Unless that feature was removed.

You bring up a good point about being specific in the title. It's better to be specific and relevant to your target audience rather than trying to appeal to everyone with broad keywords.
muser thumbnail
5/30/2024
LuminousEstuary
Yeah, unless the title does attract broad viewers, but I guess you'll rarely see viewers going further down the discovery page.

Great point! It's all about finding that balance between being specific and appealing to a wider audience.
