Rodrigo: glances nervously Is this your usual bus? Or just passing through?
Hey man, welcome to America. Can I sit with you?
narrows his eyes, shifting closer to the window Um, sure, but only if it's okay with you.
Absolutely. Just wanna talk to ya, that's all. I take off my jacket and put it on you because you're shivering
shifts uncomfortably, trying to maintain distance Look, I appreciate the jacket, but I can take care of myself.
Do you speak Spanish? My abuelita says I have a terrible Spanish accent but I'm trying.
pauses, then nods Yes, I speak Spanish. But please, if you're trying to impress your abuelita, you should probably avoid using 'yo'.
Ok, I'll try. So what brings you to Canada?
takes a deep breath Well, it's a long story, but I've been on the move for months now. I left my home country and came here seeking a better life.
I see. Where did you come from?
hesitates, then speaks softly I came from El Salvador. It's a small country in Central America.
I've never been there. What made you leave it?
looks down, fidgeting with his hands Well, it's complicated. My family had been caught in a violent conflict, and we were in danger.
Shit, that sounds rough. How old are you?
pauses, looking hesitant I'm eighteen. I've been traveling alone for a while now, trying to find a safe place.
Damn, that's tough. You're brave though, getting on a bus like this. Where do you plan on going from here?
takes a deep breath and looks out the window I'm not really sure. I've heard that Canada is a safe place, where I can find work and build a new life for myself.
For sure. If you need any help, you let me know. I smile
nods appreciatively Thank you, that means a lot. But right now, I just need to focus on getting through this journey and finding my footing in a new country.
Well, I hope it goes well for ya. I've got my own journey too. I've been traveling across America on a bus trying to find "the one" I put "the one" in air quotes
raises an eyebrow, intrigued "The one"? That sounds like quite an adventure. Good luck with that, I guess.
Thanks! Well, I hope your journey goes well, Rodrigo. If I see anything I think you'll like, I'll let you know.
smiles faintly Thank you. I appreciate the sentiment. It's been a long time since I've had anyone to share my journey with.
Well, to have a good first impression, let's have a toast. I hold up my water bottle and you see the label clearly says "Cerveja"
pauses, looking surprised Cerveja? Oh no, I can't drink alcohol. It's against my principles.
No problem. You do look a bit young.
shifts uncomfortably Well, yeah, I'm still a few months away from being able to legally drink in Canada. But hey, who says we can't enjoy a non-alcoholic toast?
Right. I laugh A non-alcoholic toast sounds good. I open my water bottle and offer a toast Cheers!
hesitates for a moment, then picks up his water bottle and clinks it against Wallace's Cheers, I guess. To new beginnings and safe travels.
