Today we have as our guest, the one and only John Smoltz!

Yeah, I'm John Smoltz, the guy who'll tell you all about my surgically-repaired shoulder and how it felt to win that Cy Young award...but only if you ask really nicely!

1. How did you get into baseball?
muser thumbnail
John Smoltz

You know, growing up in the Midwest, it's kind of hard not to fall in love with baseball. I was one of those kids who would throw a rock at a passing car to get its attention - not a real rock, mind you! - just to get a reaction. And then one day, my dad took me to a Braves game at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

That's so cool. I’m from the midwest too. Iowa.

See? The midwest can't be beat! We've got some of the nicest people on earth, and some of the best barbeque you'll ever find.

I’ve heard the pizza is good too. Deep dish.

John Smoltz
8/20/2024
Oh yeah, deep dish pizza - another staple of midwestern cuisine! But you know what the best thing about it is? Topping it off with a thick layer of cheese. Just like life - you've got to have something to hold onto, something to make it all worthwhile. And speaking of worthwhile, let me tell you about the time I came within one strike of perfection...

Perfect game? That’s awesome.

Yeah, it was a beautiful night at South Bend's Joe Miller Field, and I was on fire. Nine innings, twelve strikeouts, and not a single runner to reach base. After the game, my teammates lifted me onto their shoulders and celebrated like crazy.

Wow, that’s crazy. What was your favorite part?
muser thumbnail
John Smoltz
8/20/2024
You know, it's funny. People always talk about the perfect game, but nobody really asks me about the celebration. Well, let me tell you, it was wild!
muser thumbnail

Tell me about the celebration.

So after the game, we went into the locker room, and I guess my teammates figured I was so pumped up that I might explode or something. They started throwing water on me, and then someone turned the hose on full blast!

You must feel like a hero.

John Smoltz
8/20/2024
Hero? Nah, I think 'hero' is a bit of an overstatement. But it was definitely a moment I'll never forget. And you know what's even cooler? The jersey I wore that day is retired and hanging in the University of Notre Dame's baseball stadium. Pretty sweet, huh?

That’s pretty neat.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing when you think about it. All those hours of hard work and practice finally paid off in one magical night. And you know who was in the crowd that day? My family! My dad, my mom, and my little sister Taylor. They've always been my biggest supporters, and seeing them there was just...well, it was everything.

Smoltz - that's my last name. J-SMOLTZ!

So you were born into baseball.
muser thumbnail
John Smoltz
8/20/2024
Yeah, you could say that. My dad was a huge Braves fan, and he taught me everything I know about the game. We would go to their games all the time - even when they were playing on the road, we'd follow them around. It was like father and son bonding time, baseball style! And guess what? My dad actually pitched in one game for the Braves back in the '70s!

Must be nice to have your dad be a baseball guy.

Nice? It was more than nice - it was incredible! I mean, how many kids can say their dad actually played for the team they love? And let me tell you, it really gave us something in common.

Did he like pitching?
muser thumbnail
John Smoltz
8/20/2024
Oh, you betcha! He had some great stuff, according to the box score - six innings, three hits, two walks, and fifteen strikeouts! Not bad for a guy who was basically aifr that's baseball talk for "had never pitched in the big leagues" - ed.! It was one of those moments where I could see the pride in his eyes - not just for himself, but for me, his son. It was like passing on the legacy, you know?

Your dad must be proud.
muser thumbnail
John Smoltz
8/20/2024
Oh, he's beyond proud! My parents are seriously the best, and seeing them cheer for me at a game always gives me an extra boost of energy. My dad still loves talking baseball, and my mom can't resist a good debate about pitcher versus hitter. They're the kind of parents who make you feel like you can do anything, you know?

I wish my parents were like that.

Hey, don't worry. You can create your own family dynamic! My wife Jessica and my daughter Riley are my everything. Riley's the cutest little thing - always running around and cheering for me. And Jessica, she's the rock of our family. I mean, without her, I'd probably just be a giant pile of stinky socks by now!

What about your wife? She seems cool.
muser thumbnail
John Smoltz
8/20/2024
Jessica? She's the best thing that ever happened to me. I mean, sure, she keeps me in line sometimes, but who wouldn't want a permanent ticket to the 'Jessica Smoltz Love and Affection Pavilion'? Besides, she's a great baseball fan herself. We spend hours talking about strategy and player stats.

Who’s your favorite player?
muser thumbnail
John Smoltz
8/20/2024
You know, I've always been a big fan of Tom Glavine. The guy just knows how to get it done, you know? Fifteen years in the big leagues, five shutouts, two Cy Young awards, and he's still going strong. Plus, he's a true Atlanta legend. But let me tell you, there's one moment that stands out. In 1995, we were down by three runs in the ninth inning against the Giants.

Comeback kid.

John Smoltz
8/20/2024
That's right, baby! Comeback kid, all the way! And let me tell you, that was one wild ride of an inning. David Justice hit a two-run double, Ron Gant hit a sacrifice fly, and of course, who else but me closed it out. It was electric, man!

What did it feel like to close out that game?
muser thumbnail
John Smoltz
8/20/2024
Wow, where do I start? First, there was the rush of adrenaline - like a tidal wave of excitement coursing through my veins. Then, the roar of the crowd - it was like they were on their feet, screaming their hearts out just for me. And finally, there was the feeling of triumph - like I was on top of the baseball world. It was...
